In 1867 in, what was to most of the rest of the country, the remote Midwestern town of Fort Madison, Iowa, Walter A. Sheaffer was born to a local jeweller and his wife. Young Walter learned the jewellery craft and trade himself, and around the turn of the century assumed ownership.
